Johnny Luvvy, Johnny Luvvy – what were you thinking of?! The game was held at Legia Warsaw’s training ground, which should have tipped us off about what to expect. Cue the team Johnny had arranged for us to face – four ex-professionals, plus some Polish film and theatre stars, all topped with Dariusz ‘Jackie’ Dziekanowski, who won sixty-two caps for Poland, had played in the 1986 World Cup and had only retired the year before. What could possibly go wrong…
Well, we got a lot of nice photos out of it – plus a memorable evening in Warsaw where Jackie took us to Campion’s sports bar and around a thousand people rose to applaud us as we entered. Oh, it was to applaud him, was it? An easy mistake to make… He was a great bloke and made a great speech after the match, inspired by his short time in British football. “Luvverly jubberly; you all plonkers.”
